Creede OHV Club

Minutes of August 4, 2011

The August meeting of the Creede OHV Club was held at the home of Jerre and Connie Guthals and was called to order by Jerre Guthals, President, at 7:15 PM on August 4, 2011.  Jerre welcomed all members present and guest Ryan Crabb.

A motion was made, seconded and passed to dispense with the reading of the minutes from the previous meeting as those minutes were emailed to members and are posted on our web site.
Linda Martin gave the Treasurer’s Report, stating that there was income of $250 (from membership dues) and expenses of $155 ($140 for COHVCO dues and $15 for a refund to Lauri Jordan) leaving a balance of $2,697.61.
Joel Clark reported that all trails are open but that Fern Creek Trail 815 has a few drainage problems.  Friday, August 26th was chosen as a work day to correct the drainage problems.  Jerre reported that all the fallen timber has been cleared from FS Roads 507, 508, 505.1A and trails 815, 821 and 787 and Jim Martin added that a new sign needs to be placed at Box Canyon Trail. This sign was recently stolen since repainted and installed by the Club.
Jerre read an email he had received from the Silverton Chamber of Commerce stating ATV riders could now park at the Silverton Lakes Campground and walk a short distance into town.  Silverton is also allowing ATVs on CR110A below the town’s cemetery so that a loop can be made with CR2 and CR110.  A thank you letter will be sent to the Silverton Chamber of Commerce and the information from the email will be forwarded to the city of Creede and it’s Chamber of Commerce.
Old Business
The ‘Z’ Sign (Snow depth Marker) on FS Road 520 is not repairable.  Since it is a landmark for many who have visited the area in the past, Jerre and Jim Martin volunteered to make a new sign and a motion was made, seconded and passed to buy the supplies necessary to make the new ‘Z’ sign.
In Dennis Vincent’s absence, Jerre reported that both the CPR class and the ATV Safety Rider course were conducted in July but each was only attended by one of our Club members.  Others attending the classes were from the Southfork Club and the Mineral County Search and Rescue. The First Aid course was cancelled due to lack of participation.  Because Dennis has received a grant for these training classes, they are free to club members.  If eight people sign up for ATV Safety Training, First Aid or CPR training a course, it will be offered. No chainsaw class was offered this summer due to fires.
Jerre presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Bill Gattis for his letter writing talents when the Club applied for our grants.

New Business
Jerre introduced Ryan Crabb from the State Trails Program of the Colorado State Parks, who was here to inspect Fern Creek Trail and Lost Trail, the two trails for which our Club received grants.  Mr. Crabb informed the members that the program is currently in a ‘clean up’ and educational stage and has 4 bike riders that are gathering information on the trails and can ticket riders if their vehicles are not permitted.  Although it has always been the ‘rule’ that any vehicle (including dirt bikes and motorcycles) using a trail needed a permit, it has not been enforced.   The program hopes to educate the public on this rule over the next couple of years and will begin ticketing dirt bikes and motorcycles in 2013.  Mr. Crabb further informed the group that out of state vehicles can be either permitted or registered.  If they are registered, the information goes into a data bank and the vehicles can be more easily traced if they are stolen.
Jerre stated that we will need to install Adopt A Trail signs next year for FS trail 787 and   FS Road 505.1A
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:10.  The following 16 members attended the meeting:
